Miami’s History

Many years ago, long before the Europeans arrived, the Tequesta inhabited a huge part of southeast Florida, including Miami.

The Tequesta were a Native American tribe that lived in this space. Miami was incorporated in 1896 and began with 444 citizens under the name, “The City of Miami.” Flagler, the founder, financed and built the railroads, streets, water and power systems, and a resort hotel.

The canals were done to help drain water from the everglades that covered the majority of the land at the time.

In the early years of growth, the Miami area was known as “Biscayne Bay Country.” From a few public accounts from that era, it was known as one of the finest building sites in Florida.
